My Friday posts during Vegan MoFo have been restaurant reviews. Today is a special recap. Last Sunday I attended the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary’s (WFAS) annual ThanksLiving dinner–a fundraiser to support WFAS’s mission:
Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary provides shelter to cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, sheep, and goats who have been rescued from cases of abuse, neglect and abandonment.
We are a place where visitors can come face to face with these animals who most only know as dinner and learn about the devastating effects of modern-day agribusiness on the animals, the environment and human health. Here you can frolic with goats in a large open pasture, sit down with a pig who wants nothing more than a belly rub, cuddle with chickens who seek out your attention or get nuzzled by some very friendly sheep!
At the heart of our mission is the hands-on work of rescuing, rehabilitating and caring for farmed animal refugees — as well as educating the public about the horrific treatment of animals who are raised for food.
We arrived at WFAS and were greeted with this view.
I was a woman on a mission. Find. Clover. ASAP.
We wandered around to visit the many other animals.
That gorgeous cow? That’s Kayli, who escaped slaughter in Pennsylvania and will now live a long and happy life at WFAS. Kayli, Clover and all of the animals are the reason I am a WFAS donor and why I attended the ThanksLiving dinner–to do my small part in saving animal’s lives.
How to kick off a ThanksLIVING dinner?
Let the turkeys eat first! My kind of Thanksgiving!
It was a sold-out event–the tent was packed
and beautifully decorated.
I got to meet a couple of people who I have adored from afar.
Then we feasted.
Terry Hope Romero, the guest chef for the event, outdid herself! Here’s the menu.
Oh, there were sweet treats, too.
That’s just a sampling — I was too busy cutting off little tasty morsels to take photos of all of the dessert plates.
I scored at the silent auction! I won two great items. A Sue Coe piece
and this gorgeous Matt and Nat handbag:
It was a fun day for us but, more importantly, it was a great day for the animals.
As Thanksgiving in the U.S. nears please think about how you can help the turkeys, and all animals:
- Sponsor a turkey at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary.
- Participate in Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt-A-Turkey Project.
- Volunteer for WFAS.
- Don’t eat turkeys (or any other animal)!
One final plea. WFAS must make some important repairs to make sure the animals are warm, safe and dry this winter. I hope you’ll consider donating to the 2011 Shelter Maintenance Fund Drive. I did.
Fun news! BlogHer is celebrating vegetarian month and yesterday one of my tofu posts was featured: Technique Thursday: How to Cook With Tofu. I would love it if you popped over there an offered your own tofu tips and tricks in the comments section!

This is really cool and inspiring. The partner and I want to open a small rescue farm one day.
Clare, that would be incredible! I hope your dream comes true — for you and for animals!
That looks like such an amazing event! I would have been utterly awe struck to have met Kris Carr, and you too of course! Wish we celebrated Thanksgiving in the UK, although me and my husband might have a thanksgiving all of our own this year.
How fun to make your own celebration!
Amazing! I knowTerry worked really hard on the menu so I’m glad you enjoyed it.
That bag is beautiful, but not as stunning as you and Clover. xo
Aw, thanks. Clover is the gorgeous one. I just caught a wave of her radiant beauty!

What a wonderful event. I overslept and missed breakfast so the menu has my stomach roaring! Lol Clover is beautiful. I wanna give her a cuddle too. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, that looks like an incredible event. Wish I’d been there. The menu – triple wow!!

Wow, what a beautiful and inspiring post with gorgeous pictures! I’m so jealous! Opening an animal rescue sanctuary is a my dream if I had the money and time! So jealous about Kris Carr, that’s awesome!!!
Love the write up, JL! And that’s my hand and phone in its groovy peace-themed case in one of the dessert photos!
That looks like it was a wonderful day! I think we are going to adopt a turkey for Thanksgiving this year, since it will be our first year not eating one (thankfully).
Gosh I would love to go to that. We sponsor turkeys every year so it’d be so much fun to see them. Also, Terry’s menu looks so amazing, I am going to steal it for my Thanksgiving!
Wow what an event! So special. I too love the goats even with their mischievous ways.
Cool that some of the food was gluten-free. I always wonder if I’d survive at an event like that.
I love your new poster and I am curious how your husband feels about it.
Bitt, Dave is the one who bid on it! I didn’t even know he did it. He’s a great guy!
Looks like such a great event: incredible cause, likeminded people banding together for the animals and of course delicious foods… I miss me some Vegan Treats in the worst way!
I was at the WFAS ThanksLiving event too! I’ll be posting about one new thing I learned about factory farms each Monday through November. I also just sponsored the whole flock of turkeys at Farm Sanctuary yesterday. Why don’t we know each other? LOL.
Kim, that’s awesome! I sponsor Clover the goat and I couldn’t love her more. So awesome that you are sponsoring the turkeys! Woot! Yeah, why don’t we know each other? I’m in Westchester, by the way..
That’s so cool! I’m near Albany, other side of Woodstock. Happy for the internet introduction, at the very least! By the way, my blog is the same color as yours too. LOL. (ThisoneWIldLife.com)
What an awesome event, the food looks fantastic & the animals are so cute! I loved Farm Sanctuary when I visited & I hope I can get back there soon.
What a fulfilling event. Filling, too, judging by the menu. How cool that Terry Hope Romero was the guest chef! I just think it’s so amazing what organizations not only do for the animals living on the farm, but for raising awareness for all animals. It’s just incredible and inspiring!
Halleluyah! My Thanksgiving is always vegetarian/vegan. What a wonderful even. Thanks for the inspiration .
