You know I love my veggies (kale has a special spot, way beyond love but you know that, too).
So I was delighted when I got an email from the fine folks of Clearly Fresh Bags, makers of produce storage bags, offering me a sample of their product in return for an honest review. As is my informal “policy” I agreed to accept the sample and to provide my honest opinion if they would consider providing something to my readers, as well (more on that later).
So, what are Clearly Fresh Bags? They are large storage bags with a special “breathable” membrane designed to help make produce last longer by allowing just the right amount of oxygen in and much more carbon dioxide out. Sounds good to me!
On the counter I stored bananas, avocados and peaches, each in their own bag.
Eight days later (you read that right…EIGHT days)…
…look at these bananas! Seriously, this was all I needed to be convinced! I’ve never had bananas last this long (I usually freeze my bananas at day four or five). I also used the bags to store freshly harvested, washed and dried lettuce and kale from my garden. Those lovely greens were crisp and fresh days later.
My honest opinion? Without a doubt my fruits and veggies, both counter-top and refrigerated, did indeed last longer in the storage bags.
Want to try your own? Clearly Fresh Bags has agreed to give away samples to five (yes FIVE!) of my readers. Entering this giveaway is simple. Go to the Clearly Fresh Bags website and then come back here to leave a comment about one thing you learned (about the product, how to store produce, the technology, anything!)
This contest is open to U.S. readers only–you have until 11:00 p.m. EST Monday (June 27) to enter!

I read through the website and have a question. Are the bags reusable? It says recyclable, and reclosable. My guess would be yes? What are your thoughts?
I have been reusing them!
I learned that BreathWay Technology has been used in Research & Development by the Navy and has already been commercially applied by Chiquita and with other applications. Very interesting! I’d love to try the bags.
I went to their website. It says that there is a hole in the film behind the BreatheWay logo on each zip bag. This is because BreatheWay acts as an Oxygen/Carbon Dioxide passageway – allowing just the right amount of oxygen in and much more carbon dioxide out. 🙂 Thanks for the opportunity to win!
Something I learned…
By providing ideal atmospheres and slowing the dehydration of fresh fruits and vegetables, Clearly Fresh offers extended storage life – Naturally!
and I also learned the pricing was more reasonable than I expected!
Nice product. Oxygen in and carbon dioxide out.. Great idea. Thanks for the chance to win…

–I learned that Clearly Fresh, unlike some other brands (the ones I’ve been using), has a resealable top AND is recyclable (a huge plus).
–I learned that Clearly Fresh has been used commercially for 15 years (they cite Chiquita), and is now also used in research and development by the U.S. Navy.
–I learned they recommend items I frequently refrigerate (to prolong life) be stored outside the fridge, and in the Clearly Fresh bag, and I perused the PostHarvarst site at UC Davis that they link to.
–I learned that Clearly Fresh is much less expensive than many of the brands on the market, MUCH LESS, and I like the idea of gallon bags instead of smaller bags.
Got me quite excited about the product. Thanks!
I found it really interesting how the bags work by letting just enough oxygen in to keep them fresh! These bags seem so great, I can never seem to keep produce longer than a few short days!
They create their bag with air circulation so anything that goes into the bags will last longer and won’t brown as quickly!
Checked out the website and read this technology has been in use for the past 15 years in the commercial shipment of produce. I’d love to win, but even if I don’t I think I’ll have to order myself some of these. I could use something like this for sure!
I learned that the Clearly Fresh® bags are large clear zip bags (12” X 14”), with a breathable 3 inch square membrane on one side. Each pack contains 10 one gallon bags for $3.99. That is a good price if they are reusable. Do they vent well for drying?
The technology behind the bags is the breatheway membrane. AWESOME! I need these bags! I use so many containers, sandwich bags, plastic wrap, you name it, to try and make my produce last. haha. So this would be awesome!!! 🙂
I learned at at the reasonable price point I will actually SAVE money by being able to use all of the fruits and veggies I buy (I tend to get too excited and over-do it at the market – LOL!). Very cool concept/technology.
I learned that the bags are recyclable, which I LOVE!!! These would be great for me since I only buy food for myself. I find I can’t eat produce fast enough to keep it from rotting!
I looked at the Clearly Fresh Bags website and am very excited to try it out. I had tried another brand and was very disappointed in the result. It actually looked worse than if I had not put it in the bag. The other brand said to just twist the top of the bag. I like the fact that this bag actually closes. It seems to me that it will work much better. And reading the website I now understand how the bag works with its square being an Oxygen/Carbon Dioxide passageway/exchange. And it has a proven past. Excellent.
I learned that they have been used commercially for the past 15 years to ship fruits and vegetables. Cool product to feature! Thanks!
I have been reading alot about these bags! With 5 kids at home, we go through tons of
fruits and veggies and many things spoil before they are eaten. I want
to test these out!
I thought the Breatheway technology was fascinating! I would have thought letting any air in would turn the bananas brown, but I guess if you’re letting more carbon dioxide out than oxygen in, you’re all good 🙂
I’m amazed just how they keep bananas from browning as fast. That is awesome!
I learned that they are recyclable!
That is amazing! I’d love to try these bags. The filter for letting flow of oxygen and CO2 is really interesting. Thanks for the review and giveaway 🙂
I learned it’s recommended to store cucumbers at room temperature. I’ve always stored mine in the fridge since that’s where the grocery stores keep it!
Ethylene causes the fruit to ripen. I am surprised that the bags are reasonably priced!
I learned that the bags zip closed. I really like that.
I am so happy you reviewed these because I could really use something to keep my fruits better longer. I just checked out Clearly Fresh Bags website and I thought it was awesome that the hole behind the logo allows just the right amount of oxygen in and lets more carbon dioxide out. I hope I win! 🙂
I learned that Clearly Fresh bags can extend the shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables by up to 50%. I’m really looking forward to trying these bags. I hate to waste fresh produce ~
I learned that the bags has holes in order for there to be an oxygen/carbon dioxide passage. It lets just the right amount of oxygen in and carbon dioxide out
the website was really interesting! i learned that a lot of science went into making these bags
I have green bags, whose name I can’t remember, that extend the life of produce, but not by much. These bags, given your test, REALLY work!
I learned that breathe way– allows just the right amount of oxygen in and much more carbon dioxide out… Cool. Great giveaway!
I had no idea that something as simple as a bag could have so much technology behind it. It’s amazing to think the company has perfected the best ratio of oxygen to CO2 so as to keep product fresh!
Wahoo! Finally something that works, produce going to waste really makes me cringe. Great giveaway!
I was caught by the phrase, “allowing just the right amount of oxygen in and much more carbon dioxide out”. I’m still trying to wrap my brown around how that works. Sounds like magic to me. 🙂
What an awesome giveaway! I’ve heard of these bags, but never saw any at stores. I wondered how they worked, and it seems that the airflow prevents rapid dehydration of your veggies. I need these because I always over-buy veggies.
Cool stuff. Slowing the dehydration process. Sounds like a great product. Thanks for the post. ~Raw GF
I really love the with and without pictures. That’s the best ‘explanation’ ! Simple and straight to the point! Love it! Hope I can try one of the samples!
I always store my citrus fruit in the fridge. I learned to store lemons, limes and oranges at room temperature. Who knew… I love my fruits and veggies! I never tried bags before so I hope I get picked! TY 🙂
I just ordered mine. Hopefully they’ll keep my mixed greens crisper longer! Thanks JL.
